The 12 Powers
of Man

By Satoria E. P. Lindsey

Let us question ourselves, “Am I living from Divine Power or am I hungering and thirsting for greater understanding of truth principles?” There are various methods we can choose to connect with the Christ within and live a life centered in Divine Power. One of the choices is called The Twelve Powers of Man, which refers to the development of the twelve faculties of mind given to us by God.

When God created man He instilled within him twelve mind powers from His own image and likeness.  These are the same powers from which Jesus the Christ, our Wayshower, taught us to live. Simply put, the purpose of the 12 mind powers is to help us to live a better life through developing and strengthening the I AM faculty, the Spirit, the Christ consciousness within.

The mind powers, or faculties are:  faith, strength, wisdom, love, power, imagination, understanding, will, order, zeal, renunciation, and life.  Since the degeneration resulting from the fall of man, each of us must re-develop these attributes within by mental  exercise, determination, repetitive prayer, meditation, study, and practice. Additionally, we can only fully develop these attributes by also turning within to God, our co-creator.

When training the 12 mind faculties, we allude to related sources to help us to regenerate and strengthen mind and body. The related sources are symbolized by the 12 Tribes of Israel from the Old Testament, the 12 Disciples from the New Testament, the ganglionic centers of the body, affirmations, Bible scriptures, and the 12 months of the year, while using colors that coincide with the months of the year.

In 1930, Unity co-founder, Charles Fillmore helped Truth students quicken and hasten the process of regeneration of mind and body through symbolizing them with these sources.  The mind powers are waxed strong, usually one power at a time and one month at a time. As we become familiar with the faculties we can combine them and/or study the ones that are most needed for us individually.

For instance, Faith is the number one faculty, and is the first to be studied at the beginning of the year in January. The disciple represented for Faith is Peter, as he was the first to be quickened and spiritualized and was the first disciple whom Jesus called into God’s service.

Hebrew 11:1 defines Faith as “Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.” As we practice the faculty of Faith we attract to ourselves that which is good for us, and that which we believe we already have.

In his book, THE TWELVE POWERS OF MAN, (1930) Charles Fillmore states that each faculty has a ganglionic center to be spiritualized in the physical body, and the ganglionic location for Faith is the middle of the head–the pineal gland.

When meditating on Faith one should focus on the pineal gland in the center of the head. When we pray, meditate, and practice the 12 powers of mind daily, we further familiarize ourselves with the function, character, and physical location of these disciple-faculties.  Just as Jesus trained his 12 disciples, we can train and spiritualize these attributes to serve us in our everyday lives.

With the use of these 12 power tools, we can arise from negativity more quickly, and learn that we profit from all things that happen to us; we can also realize that we do not have to look outside ourselves directly to find health, happiness, and prosperity. God has already instilled within us all the qualities we will ever need to live a happy, healthy, and prosperous life. Therefore, we should go first to God; then to man as God directs.

We must remember that God created man fully clothed to attain his highest potential, and man’s responsibility is to co-create with God as he re-establishes the spiritual blueprint that God designed for him.

And so it is. . .
